Kuntze, Carl Ernest Otto

Born: 1843, Leipsic, Germany. Died: 1907, San Remo, Italy.



Merchant-botanist who made a voyage round the world (see below), during which the Malayan region was visited. Later he travelled in Turkestan, S. America (1891-92), and in Africa (1894).1 In 1905 he settled at San Remo.

Several plants were named after him.

Java: Pekalongan, Semarang; Demak (28), Purwodadi, Kuwu, Demak, Semarang (31); Magelang (Aug. 6), Borobudur, G. Sumbing (13), Wonosobo, Diëng Plateau (Aug. 16-19, ascending G. Prahu on the 18th); Djokja, Solo; E. Java: Madiun (26), Pulong, Pudak; Dorowati on G. Wilis (28), Ponorogo; Surabaya (Sept. 2-9); Probolinggo, G. Tengger (Bromo, 14); Malang (16); Surabaya (17-19); by sea to Batavia; Malay Peninsula: Singapore (Oct. 1); Johore (2-8); Singapore (9); Penang (12); home voyage via Calcutta, Brit. His collection 1874-76 amounts to c. 7700 plants in 30.000 specimens,3 at present in Herb. N. Y. Bot. Gard. [NY].4 Duplicates at Munich [M]; Herb. Kew [K]: 1140 nos (pres. 1887-94); Herb. Berl. [B]: 330 nos voyage 1874-76 and 35 nos in the Show Mus.; Herb. Vienna [W] (with Herb. Reichenbach): orchids from the East Indies; Herb. Leiden [L]; U.S. Nat. Herb. Wash. [US]: 13 Java nos; Herb. Edinb. [E]: 1 bundle of plants.
