Born: 1884, Heerenveen, Fr., Holland. Died: 1969, Groningen, Netherlands.

 

career:

Botanist who was educated and took his Ph. Dr’s degree at Utrecht University in 1909. Subsequently he was awarded the Buitenzorg Fund and came to the D.E.I to get acquainted with the tropical cultures, spending some time in the Foreigners’ Laboratory at Buitenzorg, engaged in physiological research.1 From 1910-13 Botanist in the employ of the Department of Agriculture in Surinam, at Paramaribo; 1914-26 Botanist, and later Sub-Director, of the Experiment Station for Java Sugar Industry at Pasoeroean; 1926-31 Director of the Deli Experiment Station at Medan (Sumatra); from 1932-49 Extraordinary Professor of Agronomy at Groningen University.

 

Collecting localities:

1910. W. Java: staying at Buitenzorg etc. (Jan. 23-July 2), collecting near Bandoeng, at Andamansari, etc.-1915. ? G. Tengger in E. Java.-Sumatra East Coast: foot ofthe Piso Piso (Dec. 26, 1928); Medan (1929).

Herb. Bog. [BO]: mainly orchids; in 1929 he discovered Utricularia bifida L. near Medan.
