Born: 1806, Sarriegos, Leon Prov., Spain. Died: 1881, Calumpit, Luzon, P.I.

 

career:

An Augustinian Roman-Catholic priest, since 1829 missionary in the Philippines. He collected plants on behalf of the 2nd edition of Blanco’s Flora (see sub Blanco).

Author of several papers on the Philippine flora.1

He is commemorated in the genus Llanosia Blanco and in several plant species.

Dr Quisumbing when visiting the Herbarium of the Jardin Botanico in Madrid [MA], did not see any plants of him (cf. ‘A Report of my trip’ 1954, p.45), but when revisiting Madrid [MA] in 1958, Dr E. Quisumbing studied his collection and selected lectotypes for Herb. Manila [PNH].

(1) For the most part short and unimportant in the period 1851-75; the most important: ‘Fragmentos de algunas plantas de Filipinas, no incluidas en la Flora de las islas de la 1.a ni de la 2.a edición etc.’ (1851, p. 1-125). His most important papers were reprinted in the 3rd edition of Blanco, Flor. Filip.; Merrill gives a detailed list of Llanos’s papers in ‘Discussion and bibliography of Philip. Fl. Pl.’ (in Enum. Philip. Fl. Pl. vol. 4) 1926, p. 202.
