career:

Colonial Engineer and Surveyor-General, Straits Settlements;1 officiating H.M. Commissioner, Perak; in 1881-82 officiating as Lieutenant-Governor of Penang.

Author of a report on the principal timber trees of the Peninsula; it recommended the creation of a Forest Department.

He collected specimens of timber trees in Penang, herbarium of which was sent for identification to Cantley (1881-82).2 Probably preserved at Kew [K] or Singapore [SING].
