Born: 1896, The Hague, Holland.

 

career:

Since 1918 officer of the Civil Service in the D.E.I., stationed successively in Djambi (Centr. Sumatra) 1919-24, in Lampong Districts (S. Sumatra) 1924-25, in Tapanoeli (W. Sumatra) 1926-32; Assistant Resident of Boetoeng and Lawoei (Celebes & Dependencies) 1933-36, at Pare Pare (SW. Celebes) 1936-37, at Makassar 1937-39. Towards the end of 1939 he went on furlough and till 1945 was involuntarily kept in Europe on account of the war. In 1946 lieutenant-colonel, Neth. War Crimes Liaison Section, Singapore; subsequently at the Parquet of the Attorney-General, Batavia; retired in Nov. 1948. In 1949/50 settled at Buitenzorg and temporarily attached to the General Agricultural Experiment Station. He made a study tour to the Lesser Sunda Islands.2 Early in 1951 he returned to Holland and settled at Bergen.

Numerous plants are named after him (frigidurhis, monodii, and psychropolitanus) (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., MS. note).

 

Collecting localities:

1937-39. SW., SE. and Centr. Celebes:1 P. Boeton, P. Moena (1938), P. Tanah Djampea (S of Salajar) (Apr. 1939); Mamboeliling, the central mountainous country; Rante Karoea, mountains N of Makale; Bawa (= Wawa) Kraeng (Bonthain) (1937); Lompo Batang (S. peak of Bonthain; Whitsun, June 5-6,1938); Mamasa, Kalosi, Malino, Palopo, Makale, Tjenrana, Pare Pare, Makassar, Madjene, Djeneponto, Bone, Malakadji, Tjamba Road, Walanae, Rante Pao, Todjamboe Road, Tomonga, Soppeng, beach near Saponda (Kendari, SE. Celebes), etc.-Malay Peninsula: Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan (1946).-1949. Lesser Sunda Islands (July 20-Aug. 8), in Timor (from Koepang to Atapoepoe) and Soemba (Waingapoe and vicinity).

His private herbarium was pres-ented to Herb. Leiden [L] in 1943, > 474 nos; duplicates of most plants in Herb. Bog. [BO]: 280 nos.

His special interest being Leguminosae, he numbered them separately, viz 1-104; plants from the central mountainous country numbered 105-175 and those from the mountains N of Makale 176-208; from G. Bonthain respectively 209-216 and 217-256.

Originally he numbered his collections separately, viz those from the Peak of Bonthain and Bawa Kraeng with B.K. nos, from the Lompo Batang with L.B. nos; from Karoea, Rante Karoea, region N of Makale, with K. nos; from Mamboeliling near Mamasa, Centr. mountains of Celebes with M. nos; also D. nos (sundries); etc. The numbers mentioned in the Cyclopaedia are those given in the Buitenzorg Herbarium. The Leiden set was numbered anew too, but the numbers will not correspond with those given at Buitenzorg. The plants from the Lesser Sunda Islands (see above) will be inserted in Herb. Bog.[BO].
