Born: 1876, Essen/Ruhr, Germany. Died: Febr. 19, 1949, Bismarck Archipelago.

 

career:

Was ordained priest at Hiltrup in 1902; Roman Catholic missionary in the Bismarck Archipelago since 1904; from 1908 onwards stationed at Lamekot, P.O. Kaewieng, in New Ireland. During World War II he was a prisoner of the Japanese at Rabaul for some years. After the capitulation he came down to Sydney to recover, but subsequently went back to New Guinea.

He is the author of a manuscript flora of the Bismarck Archipelago.

Several genera, e.g. Peekelia and Peekehopanax Harms, and Peekeliodendron Sleumer, and species of plants were named in his honour.

 

Collecting localities:

Bismarck Archipelago. In Neu Mecklenburg (= New Ireland), principally at Namatanai, in later years in Ugana District. He possibly collected at intervals, the collections presented to the Herb. Berlin were collected in 1908-13, 1922-29 and in 1935-38.-In 1910 he visited the New Hebrides, the Solomon Islands and New Britain.

New Ireland (coll. 1908-13); Herb. Bog. [BO]: 50 nos (pres. 1922, numbered > 1000), the nos 51-104 (pres. 1924), and 105-188 from Ugana Distr. (pres. 1938).

His important collections led to the description of many new species.1
