Perrottet, George Samuel

Born: 1793, Vully, Canton Waadt, Switzerland. Died: 1870, Pondicherry, India.



Botanist-horticulturist in the ‘Jardin des Plantes’, Paris, made a voyage (see below) commissioned by the French government, to introduce useful plants in Cayenne and Bourbon (Réunion). From 1824-29 Director of Cultures in Senegambia; 1834-39 Agricultural Botanist at Pondicherry. In 1839 he returned to Europe for the study of silk-culture and was back again at Pondicherry in 1843, being Government Botanist there till his death.

Author of several papers on useful plants.1

He is commemorated in the genus Perrottetia H.B.K. and in several species of plants.


Collecting localities:

Voyage in ‘Le Rhone’ and ‘La Durance’ (Capt. Philibert), 1819-21.2 Embarking at Rochefort (Jan. 1, 1819); Cayenne; Cape Verde Islands; Bourbon; E. Java: Soerabaja (Sept. 13-Oct. 14), making trips in the vicinity and to Madura Isl.; Philippines: anchoring at the entrance of Basselan (= Basilan) Strait (Nov. 18), collecting on one of the islets; Samboangan (= Zamboanga) in Mindanao (Nov. 21-Dec. 2); Luzon: Bay of Manila, anchoring at Cavite (Dec. 23); at Téralta (2 miles from Cavite), and from there to the mountains; back at Téralta and Cavite; setting out (Jan. 29, 1820) to Cueva (= cave) de San-Matheo, via Sienda and Mariquina; to Bosoboso and back to San-Matheo and environs; Téralta, Manila, and to the mountains once more; sailing from Manila (March 18), via Sunda Strait, Bourbon, Madagascar and Cayenne; back at Paris (Aug. 1, 1821).



Herb. Paris [P]: > 8000 plants in total, including few Java specimens; Herb. Deless. (Geneva [G]); Herb. Decand. (Geneva [G]): 1095 nos from several countries, incl. 58 from Manila (Luzon). From India and Senegal in Herb. Boiss. (Geneva [G]), Herb. de Franqueville (= Paris [P]), Vienna [W]. In Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM]: plants from Senegal, Nilgheries, Guadeloupe, also mosses; Herb. Kew [K]: from Senegambia (pres. 1835). Also duplicates in Herb. Berl. [B] and Leiden [L]; 42 in Herb. Lindemann (U.S.S.R. [LECB]); Herb. Mus. Cantonal Fribourg;4 Herb. Montpellier [MPU]. Also dupl. in Herb. Florence [FI].

He brought home many living plants.5

Sets of his plants (probably not from the voyage in the ‘Rhone’) were offered for sale.6
