career:

Owner of a coffee plantation in Deli, Sumatra East Coast (cf. Kränzlin in Reichenbach f., Xenia 3, p. 94 sub Dendrobium compressum).

Evidently about 1890 owner of a collection of living orchids, many of which native in Sumatra. Probably he did not collect himself, but obtained the specimens from some professional orchid hunter, or friend, in Sumatra.

Some orchids were named after him by Kränzlin (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936). A specimen of Cirrhopetalum peyerianum Kränzl. was sent to the author of this species by the intermediary of a Mr Ortgies ( ? curator of the garden).1
