career:

French explorer and plant collector who collected in Brazil (1855-c. 58) and from c. 1859-65 near Singapore and in the Philippines. He is the discoverer of Phalaenopsis schilleriana Rchb.

He is commemorated in the genus Portea Brongn. and in several species of plants.

 

collections:

He sent his living plants to Europe; in 1860 from Manila (Luzon) to Paris [P] (cf. list in ‘Arch. Nation.’ Paris). Also specimens in Herb. Leiden [L]1 and Herb. Vilmorin [VIL].2

He collected for the horticultural firm of J. Linden.
