Born: 1870, St Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A.. Died: 1942, Colorado, U.S.A.

 

career:

Botanist, graduating at Minnesota in 1899; from 1899 until his retirement in 1939 Professor of Biology at Colorado University, Boulder (U.S.A.). He stayed in Java from February until April 1904, working in the Foreigners’ Laboratory at Buitenzorg;1 he paid a visit to Tjibodas on the slopes of Mt Gedeh, climbing the latter and Mt Pangrango; he returned via Singapore. He travelled in Japan and Ceylon too.

He brought together a collection of different tropical plants interesting from a morphological and biological point of view.1 In Herb. Univ. Colorado [COLO]; 66 Java ferns in Gray Herb [GH]; 13 dupl. in U.S. Nat. Herb. Wash. [US] (numbered between 302-581).
