Römer, Lucien Sophie Albert Marie von

Born: 1873, Kampen, O., Holland.

 

career:

From 1903-06 psychiatrist at Amsterdam, from 1906-13 Medical Officer in the Royal Dutch Navy; since 1913 Inspector of the Civil Medical Service in the D.E.I.; from 1930 till his retirement in 1932 chief Government Physician in the Service of Public Health at Bondowoso (E. Java); subsequently medical practitioner at Malang (E. Java); in 1948 still living in Java. He joined a New Guinea expedition (see below) and visited some islands W of Sumatra; during both tours he made botanical collections.

Several plants were named after him.

2nd Lorentz Expedition, 1909-10.1 cf. also sub Nouhuys, Lorentz and Habbema. Sailing from Soerabaja (Aug. 15, 1909); Timor: Koepang (21); Aroe Islands: Dobo (29); Dutch S. New Guinea: running into Lorentz River (= Noord River) (Sept. 2); reconnaissance of Van der Sande River (= Bibis River) (Sept. 6-12; this trip without von Römer); ascending Lorentz River; Alkmaar bivouac (Oct. 4); ridge of the Hellwig Mts (Oct. 16); proceeding (27) to the everlasting snow (cf. sub Lorentz and Habbema); von Römer in the meantime returned to Alkmaar bivouac and set out (Nov. 13) on a second tour to Hellwig Mts in company with Rachmat (see there), ascending the summit (Nov. 29); Alkmaar bivouac; part of the way downstream Lorentz River (Jan. 10, 1910); leaving the river (March 17) and returning by way of Ambon and Makassar (SW. Celebes) to Soerabaja (arriving March 31).-Dec. 1910-Jan. 1911. Islands W of Sumatra: Nias (since Oct. 19); (Ne) Nako (= Hinako) Islands (Jan.).

Herb. Bog. [BO]: 1335 nos from New Guinea, including 7 plants from the top region collected by Lorentz and Habbema;2 duplicates in Herb. Leiden [L], Utrecht [U], Kew [K] and Berl. [B].3 In Herb. Bog. [BO]: some plants from Nias, nos 1-48 and I-XXV; and the nos 1-26 from the Hinako Islands.
