Born: 1704, Leiden, Holland. Died: 1779, Leiden, Holland.

career:

From 1732-55 Professor of Botany and Medicine at Leiden University, from 1755-75 exclusively of Medicine.

Author of some botanical papers.1

Melastoma royeni Blume was named after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

collections:

Herb. Leiden [L]; in Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM]: plants from the East Indies (ex Herb. Banks); also plants in Herb. Burman (= Herb. Deless. (Geneva [G]) & Leiden [L]); he forwarded plants to Linnaeus too.2 His herbarium was used by Blume, when the latter worked out the Melastomaceae.3

He never visited the Indies; probably plants from there were sent to him, and inserted into his own herbarium without mentioning the actual collector.
