Schultze Jena, Dr Leonhard

Born: 1872, Jena, Germany. Died: 1955, ?, Oberhessen, Germany.



Zoologist-geographer who joined a German-Dutch border expedition (see bel ow, and also sub Gjellerup) at the expense of the ‘Reichskolonialamt’ (Dept of Colonies). About 1913 Professor of Geology in the University of Kiel, and later in the University of Marburg. He travelled in SE. Africa (1903-05), Macedonia, and S. Mexico too. 

From 1913-1937 Ordinary Professor of Geography at the Philipps-Universität, Marburg. When retired he devoted himself to the study of Mexican and Central-American cultures (information courtesy Marburg University).

Several plants were named after him.


Collecting localities:

1910. North New Guinea.1 Camp of the vanguard expedition at the mouth of the Tami (Febr.-March); negotiations of Schultze at Batavia and Buitenzorg (March-Apr.); since May 4 preparatory trips, reconnoitring of the Tami and Mossu rivers; march via the Bewani Mts to Omkeer (= Keerom) River and back (June 12-July 31); Oenake Promontory (Aug.); breaking up Tami bivouac, and arriving near the mouth of the Sepik (Sept. 8-10); ascending the Sepik (= Kaiserin Augusta) River (till Oct. 30); excursion to the mountains (Peripatus summit, 1492 m) (Nov. 2-13); breaking camp, and downstream the river (17-26); to Alexishafen and Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen (27-30); Bismarck Archipelago: Rabaul (Dec. 3).



Herb. Berl. [B]: 432 nos of phanerogams and ferns, 17 nos of Fungi, 4 nos of lichens, 22 Musci; in the Show Mus. Berl.: 52 nos.

The collections were worked out in the ‘Beiträge zur Flora Papuasiens’ (Engl. Bot. Jahrb. 1912→).
