Born: 1920, Washington, D.C., U.S.A.

 

career:

Studied zoology, attending Nebraska Wesleyan University, 1938-40, and the University of Pennsylvania, 1940-42, graduating (B.A.) in June 1942. Entered the U.S. Navy in July 1942, and became a flying officer, having duty in the Atlantic Fleet and in the Pacific Fleet, 1943-1946. In July 1946 he became a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Botany, University of California, Berkeley, California.

He is commemorated in Schizaea wagneri Selling.

1944. Admiralty Islands: Los Negros (Nov. 16-19).-1945. Philippines: Samar, Guinan (March 16-18); Admiralties: Los Negros, and eastern Manus Isl. (March 20 and May 11); expedition to the Admiralty Islands (Nov. 6-29): Los Negros (6-11, 15, 17, 21-22, 24, 27-29); Mantis; Lorengau (8-9, I1-12, 18, 20), Drangot River (14), Patusi (24), Watani River (25); Lou Isl. (13, 16); Tawi Isl. (24); Mount Tjajiak (Mt Dremsel Area, Manus, 25); New Guinea, Biak (Schouten Isls, Dec. 2-3); Philippines: Samar, Calicoan and Guinan (Dec. 5).

Botanical collections were made in the Philippines, Bismarck Archipelago, Solomons, New Guinea, Marianas, Ryukyus, Marshalls, and Hawaiian Islands, during 1944-46, jointly with D.F. Grether, while flying in the Pacific Area. Number series, 3200-4639, including collections of D.F. Grether (see there). First series deposited at Herb. Berkeley (Cal. [UC]).
