Watson, James Gilbert

Born: 1889, Kew, England. Died: Jan. 6, 1950.

career:

At first in the Agricultural Department and then a Forest Officer in the Malay Peninsula (1913 onwards).¹ In 1926 appointed Forest Economist, later in charge of the Forest Research Institute, Kepong. In June 1935 he visited Brunei and Sarawak. In Oct. 1940 he was appointed Director of Forestry, Malaya. During World War II he was interned by the Japanese, and repatriated to England in 1945, retiring in 1946.

Author of ‘Some materials for a forest history of Malaya’ (Mal. For. 13, 1950, p. 63-72).

Eugenia watsoniana Henderson is named after him.

(possibly partly no collections made). Malay Peninsula (1913 onwards): Johore and elsewhere, also on G. Belumut (in one of the first months of 1923) and on Kedah Peak; NW. Borneo: Brunei (June 1935); Malay Peninsula: Perlis (Jan. 1936); Johore, Kedah and Trengganu (1937).
