Born: 1863, Amsterdam, Holland. Died: 1935, Wassenaar, Z.H., Holland.

 

career:

Botanist, from 1887-88 teacher at a secondary school at Dordrecht, in 1888 working for half a year at the Zoological Station at Naples, from 1889-91 teacher at The Hague. During the latter period he worked from March-July 1890 in the Foreigners’ Laboratory at Buitenzorg.1 From 1891-96 Director of the Sugar-cane Experiment Station at Kagok (Tegal, Centr. Java);2 from 1896-1934 Professor of Botany at Utrecht University; in 1933 (after his official superannuation) appointed Extraordinary Professor at Leiden at the expense of the University Fund. During many years president of the Natural Science Division of the Royal Academy, and a representative of the Dutch country at many congresses.

In 1901/02 he travelled in the West Indies, and visited Surinam for a second time in 1923; in 1929 he stayed for two months at Peradeniya (Ceylon).

Author of some text-books, of mainly phytopathological and physiological papers, and of some dealing with the family of the Podostemonaceae.3

He is commemorated in Cochlospermum wentii Pulle, and other plants.

Between 1890-96. W. Java: Depok (Apr. 26, 1890), Batavia, G. Salak, Tjiomas (May 2, 1890), Priangan Residency, Tjipetir (May 8, 1890), Telagabodas, G. Papandajan (1890); Centr. Java: G.Slamat with de Monchy (see there, in May 1892); E. Java: G. Tengger.

After his return to Holland he revisited Java on several occasions, viz from June-Oct. 1914 to attend the Rubber Congress at Soerabaja, in 1927 on his way back from the 3rd Pac. Sci. Congr. at Tokyo, and in 1929 during the 4th Pac. Sci. Congress at Bandoeng.4 On these occasions probably no collections were made.
