career:

Forest Officer, educated at Michigan State College, East Lansing, Mich. (B.Sc. 1911, M.F. 1918); on the staff of the Bureau of Forestry at Manila (P.I.), 1911-16; in 1917 appointed Conservator of Forests at Sandakan, Br. N. Borneo, and from 1919-31 Director of Agriculture and Conservator of Forests; in the U.S. Forest Service, 1935-42. In 1969 he lived in California.

Merrill named several plants after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

 

Collecting localities:

Philippines. Before 1917.-Br. N. Borneo: Tawao (June 5, 1917), Marutai (June 6, 1917), Tawao (May 17 and 22, 1918), Labuk (Sept. 30, 1918), in 1919, Tawao (Sept. 1920), Sandakan (Oct. 1920), Batu Lima near Sandakan (Oct. 14, 1920); Banguey Island (Oct. 1922); Balambangan Island (c. May 1923); in 1924 in Br. N. Borneo and Brunei (NW. Borneo), by his collectors.

In 1918 E.D. Merrill had made an agreement with the Forest Department in Br. N. Borneo, that the first set of all collections made by employees of that department was to go to Manila. When Merrill went to California in 1924, the collections were sent thither.1 Up to 1924 the first set of Borneo plants to Herb. Manila [PNH], 2nd set at Sandakan [SAN]. Collection 1924 D.D. Wood (coll. Evangelista, P. Orolfo, Puasa and Goklin) in Herb. Berkeley (Cal.) [UC], including the actual types of the new species, while isotypes would be sent to several of the larger herbaria, including that of Manila [PNH]. Dupl. in Herb. Kew [K] (pres. 1929 by Berkeley, Cal.); Herb. Bog. [BO] (pres. 1927, 1929); Herb. N.Y. Bot. Garden [NY]: 305 Borneo plants (acq. 1931); Herb. Deless. (Geneva [G]): 12 Br. N. Borneo plants; O. Ames Herb. (Cambr., Mass.) [GH]: orchids.
