Born: 1824, Zaandam, Holland. Died: April 22, 1864, Pontianak, Borneo.

 

career:

Came to Java at his own expense, and joined the Civil Service in 1845. From 1853-58 he was Assistant Resident of Koetei (E. Borneo), from 1858-63 ditto of Sambas (NW. Borneo), and subsequently Resident of the Western Division of Borneo. In 1864 he went to Sindanglaja (W. Java) on sick-leave.

Eusideroxylon zwageri Teijsm. & Bin. was named after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936). The authors made a special note that Zwager sent several interesting plants to the Buitenzorg Botanic Garden.

In Hort., and probably partly in Herb. Bog. [BO]. In 1863 he sent material of gum-yielding plants.1
