career:

Cytologist, employed by the Firestone rubber plantations in Monrovia (W. Africa) 1926-28; in 1929 he travelled in Cuba, Honduras and Guatemala studying the flora; since 1930 he was employed by the Goodyear Rubber Plantations at Dolok Meranggir (Sumatra East Coast). In the fifties Consultant of the Good Year Rubber Co. His wife assisted him in plant collecting in Sumatra in behalf of the Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain, Mass.

Bangham is the author of some cytological papers.

Merrill named plants after both of them, e.g. Ardisia banghamii, Endospermum banghamii and Adenia catherinae Merr.

 

Collecting localities:1 

Dec. 1931-Febr. 1932. Sumatra East Coast: on various estates, Simeloengoen, Dolok Meranggir, Sinaboeng and Sibajak volcanoes, Karoland, Brastagi, P(a)rapat (Toba Lake); N. Sumatra, Atjeh: along the coast N of the border of Deli, as far as Bireuen, Takengon, Lake Tawar, Balek, Redelong Volcano; Tap(i)anoeli: Deleng Piso-piso. Further in 1932 a number of plants from various localities and dates.

From Sumatra in Herb. Arn. Arbor. [A]: ± 600 nos betw. 600-1300; a nearly complete set (474 nos) in Herb. N.Y. Bot. Gard. [NY]; in Gray Herb. [GH]: c. 70 nos herbaceous plants; in Herb. O. Ames [GH]: ± 70 nos of orchids; in Herb. Kew [K]: Sumatra duplicates. The collection was identified by Merrill in collaboration with others.2
