career:

Medical doctor, algologist, friend of Miller.

He is commemorated in the genus Basteria Mill

In Herb. Linnaeus = Linn. Soc. Lond. [LINN]: > 300 plants from Java, pres. by Dr Baster from Zealand (Holland).1 It is improbable that he himself was the collector.
