Born: 1886, Amsterdam, Holland. Died: July 20, 1943, Java, executed by the Japanese.

 

career:

Planter in Java, 1904-19; collector employed by the Museum and Inquiry Office for Economic Botany (Buitenzorg) under K. Heyne in 1919-23, and as such making extensive travels in the Dutch East Indies; since 1923 planter again, finally on Soeka Ati Estate near Bandoeng. Many plants were named after him.

1906. W. Java: Buitenzorg Bot. Gardens (Jan. 22-23); E. Java: Djember.-1919. Kangean Archipelago, with C.A. Backer (March 13-May 19) in order to learn the practice of plant collecting, Beguin probably staying for some time after that. Sumatra East Coast: Bengkalis and environs (end ofAug.-Nov.).-1920. N. Celebes: Manado Res. (Febr.-Apr.) and Borneo: Balikpapan (March-Apr.); Moluccas (since Oct.).-Oct. 1920-23. Moluccas: Ternate, Tidore, Halmaheira (Galela and Weda) and surrounding islands.-1924. W. Java: Mandalagiri, G. Papandajan; Centr. Java: Soerakarta.-1925. W. Java: Garoet.-1926. W. Java: Priangan Res., Garoet; Centr. Java: Bojolali and Pekalongan.-1927. W. Java: Tjisoerian near Tjikadjang (May); Tjisoerian near Garoet (end of Aug.); Kawah Kamodjan, G. Papandajan, Priangan Res.; Centr. Java: Pekalongan, G. Merapi.-1929. E.
