Bélanger, Charles Paulus

Born: 1805, Paris, France. Died: 1881, St Pierre, Martinique.

 

career:

Sailed for India charged by the French Colonial Department, to establish a Botanic Garden at Pondicherry.1 After a long journey he reached his destination in 1826, from where making trips to Pegu and Java. At Buitenzorg he obtained permission to take with him all the plants he wanted from the Botanic Garden there. Sailing round Africa, he was back in France in 1829. In 1853 he was appointed Director of the Botanic Garden at Saint-Pierre, staying in Martinique till his death.

Several species of ferns and the genus Belangera Cambess. were named after him.

1828. W. Java: Bantam and Buitenzorg, P. Merak, and environs of Batavia.

In total 5400 species. In Herb. Deless. (Geneva [G]); Herb. Paris [P]; Herb. Berl. [B]: cryptogams from East India, Java and Bourbon, totally 149 nos (pres. 1890); Herb. Florence [FI]: Java and Sunda Islands; Herb. Kew [K]: coll. of Ch.J. (probably printer’s error) Bélanger (pres. 1863); Herb. Bot. Gard. St Petersb. (= Leningrad [LE]): Plantae ex India orientali; Herb. Leiden [L]: Java and Sunda Islands (1828).

The collections were partly dealt with by Bélanger himself and others.1

He made zoological collections too.
