Born: 1912, Ronda (Wilkes County), N. Carolina, U.S.A.



Was educated in agriculture at the University of California (B. S. 1941); Range Examiner, Range Development Service, U.S. Dept of Interior, 1941-42; on active duty, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, 1942-46; Asst Forest Technician and later Forest Technician, California division of Forestry, 1947-to present. Between Nov. 1942 and July 1945 he collected in the South and Western Pacific while on duty with the U.S. Marine Corps. Outside of the Malaysian region as accepted in this Cyclopaedia, he visited and collected in the Solomon, Palau and Russell Islands, the Ryukyu Archipelago, and New Caledonia.


Collecting localities:

1943-44. Goodenough Isl. (d'Entrecasteaux Isls, Terr. of Papua) (Oct. 21-Dec. 15, 1943), exploring much of the NE. portion of the island on foot, collecting at: Haiwali village(Nov. 14,22), Malauma Creek (27), Nubuali village (Dec. 5), and W of Haiwali (11); Bism. Archipelago, NewBritain (Dec. 26, 1943-May 4, 1944), visiting the entire western end, and the N. coast as far eastward as Talasea, collecting at: Bitokara Mission, Talasea (Apr. 22, 1944); Warn village, Talasea (23); Cape Gloucester (May 2).



Grasses in U.S. Nat. Herb. Wash. [US], isotypes in Herb. Berkeley [UC]. The total collection includes 104 nos of grasses,1 but evidently other plants too, as the highest number mentioned is 237. In Goodenough Isl. the nos 118-136 (grasses) were collected, and in New Britain the nos 137-142 (grasses).
