Born: 1868, Scotland. Died: March 6, 1914, Klang, Selangor, Malay Peninsula.

 

career:

Was appointed in the Ind. For. Dept in 1891 and stationed in Burma; in 1901 to the Fed. Malay States on deputation; Chief Forest Officer, afterwards Conservator of Forests (1904) in the Fed. Mal. States and Str. Settlements, 1901-14. Author of ‘Trees and timbers in the Malay Peninsula’ (1911-12).

Alpinia murdochii was named after him.

In 1913 he contributed to the Singapore Field Number series on his tour of inspection down the Pahang River (accompanied by a collector from the Botanic Gardens, Singapore).2 This collection, in Herb. Kuala Lump. [KEP] too, is numbered 151-350. In Herb. Sing. [SING]: other collections (pres. 1906). In Herb. Kew[K]: plants from around Kuala Lumpur in 1912. The herbarium of the Plus & Chior Reserve is, according to Burkill (in Gard. Bull. Str. Settlem. 4, 1927, p. 157), mislabelled Selangor.
