Born: 1856, Zaandam, N. H., Holland. Died: June 1919, buried at Lawang, E. Java.

career:

Office-clerk at Vlissingen and Koudekerke, and founder of a botanical garden at the former place, of which, however, nothing remains. In April 1907 he sailed for Java in pursuance of an advertisement of Mousset (see there) who looked for a partner in his nursery. M. was given to drinking and Buysman was temporarily led away. Later the proprietor of the Hotel Nongkodjadjar (G. Tengger) took him into his employ from a feeling of pity; in hours of leisure Buysman grew plants and even exchanged seeds abroad. In 1916 he still published a catalogue of plants for sale. Author of some papers on G. Tengger.1

collections:

Herb. Utrecht [U]; less in Herb. Bog. [BO]. The plants are from G. Tengger, E. Java (exceeding 260 nos); in Herb. Utrecht [U] also material from Kidoel (= ? Zuidergebergte, Centr. Java) collected in Aug. 1907. Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM]: 50 phaner.

5 vasc. crypt. from Java (pres. 1907; the same amount mentioned for 1909, probably a mistake!); U.S. Nat. Herb. Wash. [US]: 154 Java plants.

In ± 1887 somebody collected in the D.E.I. on behalf of Buysman for a general Herbarium analyticum, the latter mainly composed of useful plants. In April 1887 Buysman had the following subscribers: Prof. Oudemans (Amsterdam), the Botanical Mus. at Utrecht, the State Herbarium at Leiden, Prof. Willkomm at Prague and Prof. Henriques at Coimbra (Portugal).2 In Herb. Groningen [now mainly in L]: collections ofthe pre-Indian period; in Herb. Hamburg [HBG] some nos, probably pertaining to the Herb. analyticum.

Also specimens in Herb. Kew [K].
