Croockewit, Dr Johan Hendrik

Born: 1823, Amsterdam, Holland. Died: 1888, Nijmegen, Gld, Holland.



Went to the D.E.I. in 1849, where he was appointed Officer charged with Natural Science Investigations. In Oct. 1850 he began with the geological exploration of Billiton; subsequently he was charged with an investigation of coal-beds in Borneo and later with scientific observations in the Moluccas and New Guinea. In 1852 he worked for some years in the Chemical Laboratory at Buitenzorg; in 1859 he went on furlough, after the expiry of which he was appointed Assistant Resident of the Civil Service, successively stationed at Solok, Priaman and Padang, all in Sumatra West Coast Residency. At the end of his career he was Resident of Banka; he quitted the Government service in 1871.

Coelogyne croockewitii Teijsm. & Binn. was named after him.


Collecting localities:

1850-51. Billiton.1 Making 3 extensive tours: from Tandjong-Pandan to Blantoe; via Boeding (in the north) to the Boeroeng-Mandi and Soengai Padang and Penjabin; from Tandjong-Pandan by way of G. Tadjem to Lenggang (SE. part of the island).-1851. SE. Borneo: at Pagattan and Kusan, together with H. von Dewall.-1854-56. W. Borneo,2 e.g.: G. Klam, E of Sintang (beginning of July 1855), Pen(e)ng Mts (Bt Penai, SW of Silat) (July 12), saline spring near the Spauk (= Sepaoek) River (left tributary of the Kapoeas) and Palo Distr.; prospecting for coal near the Kapoeas and Melawi (1855-56).-1858. Voyage in the ‘Etna’ to the Moluccas and New Guinea.3 Cf. von Rosenberg (detailed itiner., liter., etc.).



He sent 120 nos of Banka plants to Herb. [BO] and Hort. Bog. (1870). Teijsmann & Binnendijk described some of his Borneo plants. He was the first to state the occurrence of the guttapercha tree in Borneo.4
