Born: 1817, Delft, Z.H., Holland. Died: 1896, The Hague, Holland.



Was educated at the Technical College, Delft, and was sent to England (1847-49) for the training of student mining engineers; in 1850 he was appointed Chief of the Mining Department of the D.E.I. at Batavia, and as such he travelled in many parts of the Malay Archipelago. He was pensioned off at the beginning of 1866 and was subsequently in the employ of the Billiton Company till 1871.


Collecting localities:1

1851. Madoera (Febr.);2 Bawean (back at Soerabaja on Apr. 15); Banka (Muntok, June 14); Billiton (= Blitoeng): arriving June 28 with the assistant engineer Huguenin (see there) anchoring in front of the Tjiroetjoep (= Tieroetjoek), headquarters at fort Tandjong Goenoeng; at the end of his stay he made 2 one-month trips, viz the 1st to kp. Sidjoek and Soengei Lolo, and the 2nd by proa along the coast, visiting the western, southern and eastern coast regions and returning round the north.-1852. SE. Borneo: arrival at Bandjermasin (March); Tandjoeng Batoe (Apt. 2-10); P. Soe(w)angi, P. Laoet, Pagatan; Madoera (May).2-1853. Borneo.-1855. SE. and E. Borneo: on the way to the east coast, visiting P. Datoe and Bt Timah (Sept. 21); near the Mahakam (24-27), Samarinda-1858. Sumatra West Coast: Padang Highlands.-1863. Billiton.



Principally living plants to Hort. Bog.; some from Borneo were described by Teijsmann & Binnendijk in Nat. Tijdschr. N.I., and by Hasskarl in his catalogue of the Buitenzorg Botanic Garden; specimens preserved in Herb. Bog. [BO]. Apparently he collected in Banka too;3 living plants from Billiton in Hort. Bog. (pres. 1866). No data about collections of plants from other islands are known to us.

In 1869 C. de Groot of Batavia sent living plants to Hort. Bog.; ? identical.
