Gwynne-Vaughan, David Thomas

Born:1871, Llandovery, England. Died: 1915, Reading, England.

 

career:

Assistant in the Botany Department of Glasgow University, 1896-1907; in 1907 appointed Head of the Botany Dept at Birkbeck College, London; in 1909 Professor in Queen’s University Belfast (Ireland), and in 1914 transferred to the chair of Botany in University College Reading.

In 1897 he was attached to a rubber prospecting expedition up the Amazon and Purus rivers; in 1899 to the Skeat Expedition (see below).

Rhynia gwynne-vaughani KIDSTON was named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

Skeat Expedition, 1899.1 From the southern Siamese Malay States travelling towards Kelantan in the Malay Peninsula (detailed itiner., liter., etc. cf. sub Yapp; cf. also sub Annandale). He left the expedition either just before,1 or soon after it crossed the border into the Malay States,2 starting for Bangkok from Belimbing.

In Herb. Kew [K] (pres. 1909) and Cambridge [CGE].

Most of the plants collected in Siam;2 he numbered in the field (cf. Burkill in Gard. Bull. Str. Settlem. 4, 1927, nos 4-5).

The Curator of the Aberdeen University Herbarium recently (1973) came on a field note-book given to Prof. W.G. Craig by Dr O. Stapf, at one time curator of the Kew Herbarium. It has been returned to Kew; it lists plants collected during the 1899 Skeat Expedition in the Malay Peninsula, nos 200-639 with informative notes.
