Born: 1847, Lurgan, Ulster, Ireland. Died: 1914, Bristol, England.

 

career:

Since 1874 custom-house officer in China (stationed at Peking, Ning-Poi, Hainan and Formosa [= Taiwan]). He displayed a keen interest in the flora of China. He travelled in Java, Sumatra, etc. in periods of leave.

Polypodium hancockii Baker was named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

1892. Sumatra, visiting G. Kerintji (Sumatra West Coast), etc.1 He visited Java in the same year. He collected mostly ferns.

Herb. Kew [K]:2 plants from China, Formosa [= Taiwan], Japan, Jamaica, Guatemala, Mexico, Sumatra (90) and Java (91). Gray Herb. [GH]: Malaysian duplicates; U.S. Nat. Herb. Wash. [US]: 57 dupl. Sumatra and Java; in Herb. Hance (= Brit. Mus. [BM]); Herb. Univ. Oxford [OXF] (with Herb. du Bois); Herb. Paris [P]: ferns from Sumatra (19) etc. It was stipulated that those specimens which were not required by Kew, should go to Bristol [BRIST].
