Born: 1861, Danzig, Germany.

Died: June 24, 1889, Finschhafen, former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland, NE. New Guinea.

 

career:

Assistant in the Botanic Garden of Breslau 1883-84, who took his degree in 1886 and was appointed Botanist of the German New Guinea Comp. and Head of Kelana Station in 1888.

The genus Hellwigia Warb. and several other plants were named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

NE. New Guinea, former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland. 1888. Arrival at Finschhafen (May 7); Kelana Station (July 15-Aug. 11).-Expedition to Finisterre Mts with Hugo Zöller (correspondent of the ‘Kölnische Zeitung’):1 from Finschhafen (Oct. 3) to Konstantinhafen, Oct. 7 starting the march to Finisterre Mts, returning Oct. 21.-With the plant collector Burke (see there) by steam launch (Dec. 17) from Finschhafen to Tigedu, situated on the east entrance of Hänischhafen; visit of Bukau Asip village and returning on foot to Finschhafen.2-1889. With Burke from Finschhafen (Jan. 12) to Busum, from where first ascent of the Sattelberg via Pasai (reaching one of summits on the 14th); vicinity of Pasai and via Bu Laki to Buarba (15); basin of Ubaja River, via Basakai in SE. direction back to Finschhafen.3-Boat tour (March 9-16) to kp. Kemboa, situated at Festungskap; exploring Póum (= Poom) District.4-With O. Warburg (see there) to the Sattelberg (Apr. 6-12) from Busum via Pasia; descent to Siliio; back at Busum (11) and Finschhafen (12).5

The numbering runs as follows: nos 1-184 from Kelana, 186-246 vicinity of Finschhafen, 247-280 from Sattelberg, 281-297 vicinity Finschhafen, 298-366 Finisterre Mts, 367-678 vicinity Finschhafen (405-438 of the tour along the coast in western direction, 493-672 from the Sattelberg).
