Born: 1821, Niehem, Westphalia, Germany. Died: 1886, Heidelberg, Germany.

 

career:

Physician, educated at Göttingen, Heidelberg, and Berlin. An affection of the lungs forced him to leave his country. He set sail for Australia, from there passed to Manila (Luzon, P.I.), and on account of his health embarked on a brig bound for San Francisco. By advice he subsequently settled in the Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands, where he resided from 1851-71.1 In 1865 and 1866 he was on a voyage as Commissioner of Immigration for the Hawaiian Government to China and the East Indies. After his return in Europe (1871) he was in Germany and Switzerland, and stayed for some years in Madeira and Teneriffe.

Embelia hillebrandii Mez and other species were named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

1865-66. He visited Java, the Buitenzorg Botanic Gardens, etc.; Sumatra; the Malay Peninsula and Singapore; Hongkong and China. At Ambarawa in Centr. Java (cf. Ruhland in Pflanzenreich 13, 1903, p. 41).

[BM]: Sandwich Isls 452 nos (exch. 1890); Herb. Deless. (Geneva [G]): China 537 nos (pres. 1890); Herb. Boiss. (Geneva [G]): from China. From his Asia voyage he brought back numerous living plants to Hawaii.

He collected without dates and exact localities; certainly some plants are erroneously localized, e.g. Philydrum lanuginosum recorded from Java.2
