Born: 1878, Stromberg im Thale, Rhineland, Germany. Died: 1950, Cordoba, Argentine.

 

career:

Botanist who took his Ph. Dr’s degree in 1903, travelled in Thailand (Siam) in 1904-05,1 making preliminary researches in Ceylon and the Malay Peninsula. He made botanical and ethnological collections. Later appointed Professor of Botany at Cordoba in Argentine, still filling the latter office in 1938. In 1912 he emigrated to The Argentine, and made botanical explorations in Patagonia and The Argentine from 1913-15, resulting in numerous papers; in 1916 appointed Professor of Botany at Cordoba University and Director of the Botanical Museum there; resigning in 1946.

Author of many botanical papers. New plants from Siam [= Thailand] were described by himself.

Viola hossei Backer was named after him.

Leaving Genoa (June 22, 1904); staying for some time in Ceylon, Singapore, and the Malay Peninsula, e.g. visiting Semangko Pass with Ridley in Aug.;3 Siam, Bangkok (Aug. 30); exploration of Siam; leaving (Aug. 5, 1905) on a short visit to Singapore and the Malay Peninsula, specially visiting estates, e.g. on G. Angsi and in Negri Sembilan; back to Bangkok (Sept. 8); in Jan. 1906 returning by way of Singapore to Europe.
