career:

Surgeon who brought plants to Petiver, from Spain, Azores, Borneo, and Flores (cf. Mus. PETIV., 1695-1703, p. 45, 94; and l.c. 1702, p. 63). 

A. Hamilton (in ‘A New Account of the East Indies’ 2, 1744, p. 144) mentions a Mr Sylvanus Landen, who had been Chief of Borneo and who expressed his astonishment that the English E.I. Company should have settled at Bandjermasin. Possibly identical.

Collecting localities:

Settled at Banjar = Bandjermasin, SE. Borneo in 1700 (cf. letter from James Cuninghame to Petiver, Sloane MSS 3321, folio 52, British Museum). The collecting locality ‘Doole’ (see sub S. Landman in Cycl. Fl. Mal. 1, 1, 1950, and sub S. Landon in Suppl. Cycl. ibid. 1, 5, 1958), is rightly the oldest Portuguese settlement in Solor, Lesser Sunda Islands.
