career:

German forest officer and reservist officer of Berka; leader of the first expedition under the auspices of the German New Guinea Company. Since July 1886 ‘Vorsteher’ of Finschhafen Station.

Illipe mentzelii Krause was named after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

 

Collecting localities:

NE. New Guinea, former Kaiser-Wilhelmsland. 1885. Arriving in Java in August, recruiting coolies; Samarai Isl. in China Strait, E of New Guinea (Nov. 1); Killerton Isl. (C. Hunstein embarking here); Finschhafen (Nov. 5), founding a station.1-1886. With Grabowsky and Hunstein near the Kaiserin Augusta (= Sepik) River (Apr. 4);2 with Hollrung on a trip near Finschhafen.
