Born: 1856, Samitz, Silesia, Germany. Died: 1929, Genoa, Italy.

 

career:

Mycologist, educated at Breslau, since 1879 on the staff of the Botanic Garden at Padua, working under Saccardo; in 1882 appointed private teacher in the University of Modena, in 1883 Director of the ‘Stazione Agraria’ there, and in 1887 Professor of Botany at Genoa. He made a study tour to Ceylon and Java, in the latter island especially studying Myxomycetes in the laboratories of the Botanic Gardens at Buitenzorg and Tjibodas.1

Author of some papers relating to Java.2

He is commemorated in the genus Penzigia Saccardo.

 

Collecting localities:

W. Java (Nov. 23, 1896-Apr. 1, 1897): principally at Buitenzorg and Tjibodas (slope of G. Gedeh). He visited the 3 islands of the Krakatau group in company with Treub, Raciborski, Boerlage, and Clautriau (March 17, 1897); the excursion was preceded by a trip to P. Merak (off the NW. point of Java).

In the German biography (see below) he is said to have visited Java and Sumatra; as to the latter island no data are known to the author.

Apparently cryptogams only, viz Fungi and Algae.3 Original set at Genoa [GE]. In Herb. Bog. [BO]: Fungi Javanici (pres. 1903); Herb. Vienna [W]: Fungi Javanici, 215 nos (purch. 1904).
