Born: 1851, Breslau, Germany. Died: 1896, Capiz, Panay, P.I.

 

career:

Ethnologist who made several explorations in the Philippines, the first one as early as 1876-79;1 in autumn 1881 he set out with O. Koch (see there) for a 2nd voyage. In November 1885 he set out once more to the Philippine Archipelago, that time planning to devote more time to botanical collecting.2

Rafflesia schadenbergiana Goepp., and Rhododendron schadenbergii Warb. were named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

1881-82. Philippines. Luzon: Manila (few days); sailing for W. Luzon, the country of the Negritos (staying some weeks); back to Manila; visit to Panay, Guimaras, Negros and Sulu Archipelago. From the end of Dec. 1881-June 1882 he stayed in S. Mindanao, Davao, collecting on Mt Apo (Febr.) and on the near Mt PArag (Apr.),3 being back at Breslau (Germany) towards the end of August.

 

collections:

His entomological collection at Dresden and Vienna. Botanical collection probably at Dresden [DR] or Breslau [WRSL]. He collected in 1882 with O. Koch (see there), including a new species of Rafflesia etc.4 The latter material in Herb. Breslau [WRSL]; in 1880 he brought home an Amorphophallus tuber to Breslau. Up till the present no later Philippine collections are known to me.
