Born: 1887, Leeuwarden, Fr., Netherlands.

 

career:

Biologist, educated at Groningen University (1906-12), where be took his Dr’s degree in 1917. From 1910 teacher in natural history in secondary schools, from 1912 onwards in The Hague; he lectured at Leiden University in didactics and later also in the history of biology, 1927-53.

He was enabled to visit the Dutch East Indies as a ‘Deterdinger’, sent out by the Jan Pietersz. Coen Society (Amsterdam). He wrote numerous small popular papers on his travel impressions.

Editor of ‘Alle de Brieven van A. v. Leeuwenhoek’ (The Collected Letters).

 

Collecting localities:

1931 (2nd half). He visited: Sumatra East Coast: Medan and north of it, G. Sibajak; Java, E of Batavia, G. Bromo (Oct.), Billiton, Bali, and Madoera.
