Born: 1865, St Pölten, W of Vienna, Austria.

 

career:

For many years German consul at Padang, Sumatra West Coast. He rendered Schlechter good service when the latter was investigating Padang and environs in 1907.

Selaginella schildei Hieron. (reduced to S. tylophora v.A.v.R.) was named after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

 

collections:

Herb. Vienna [W]: 1 herbarium specimen (pres. 1904); Herb. Bog. [BO]: a few plants collected near Padang in 1912.

He sent tubers of Amorphophallus titanum to the Bot. Gard. Hamburg in 1927 (cf. Ber. D.B.G. 49, 1931, p. 92).

Some hundreds of mosses came, into the hands of R. Herzog in Jena, who described the Hepaticae (Ann. Naturhist. Mus. Wien 53, 1943, p. 358-373, 8 fig.).
