Born: Hoorn, N.H., Holland. Died: 1625, Bay of Antongii on the E. coast of Madagascar.

 

career:

Sea-farer who circumnavigated Cape Horn in his ship the ‘Eendracht’ in 1615; he discovered the Schouten Islands in 1616, reached Java by way of the Moluccas, and subsequently returned to Holland.

He is commemorated in the genus Schoutenia Korth. (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).
