Schrader, Carl

Born: 1852, Brunswick, Germany. Died: 1930, Berlin, Germany.



From 1878-89 observer of the Observatory at Hamburg, in which function he was stationed in S. Georgia in 1882/83. He was the leader of an expedition to New Guinea (see below), in which island he founded a meteorological station at Finschhafen1 in June 1886. From 1890-1923 Government Inspector for examinations of steersmen for foreign trade; in 1914 he travelled in the Crimea.

Cyrtandra schraderi K.Schum. and Aglaia schraderiana Harms were named after him (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

Former Kaiser-Wilhehnsland, NE. New Guinea, 1886-87. Detailed data cf. sub Hollrung. 1886.2 At first combined excursions with Hollrung in the vicinity of Langemak; by boat to the coast region N of Finschhafen (July 3), ascending the Busim River, and back at Finschhafen (21); trip to the Kaiserin Augusta River (= Sepik) (July-Aug.).-1887.3 Bagili Distr. He collected at least some Musci;4 in ? Herb. Berl. [B].
