Sinclair, Andrew

Born: Paisley, England. Died: March 25, 1861, drowned in Rangitata River, Middle Island, New Zealand.

 

career:

Physician who entered the service of the Royal Navy about 1824; Assistant-Surgeon on the voyage of the ‘Sulphur’ (see below) under Capt. Sir Edw. Belcher. From 1842 onwards he made several voyages to Australia and New Zealand, collecting diligently.

He was commemorated in the genus Sinclairia Hook. (= Liabum).

collections:

Herb. Kew [K]: South America, New Zealand (pres. 1836-61); Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM]: 600 New Zealand plants (purch. 1858).

He collected during the voyage of the ‘Sulphur’, but perhaps not in the Malaysian region. The botanical results of the expedition were edited by Bentham.2
