Valeton, Theodoric

Born: 1855, Groningen, Holland. Died: 1929, The Hague, Holland.



Botanist who was educated and took his Dr’s degree (1886) at Groningen University. In 1889 he came to Java as Bacteriologist of the Sugar Experiment Station at Pasoeroean; since 1892 on the staff of the Buitenzorg Botanic Gardens, from 1903 until his retirement in 1913 Head of the Herbarium. From 1916-19 he stayed once more at Buitenzorg for the study of the Zingiberaceae.

Author of the botanical text of the ‘Bijdragen tot de kennis der Boomsoorten op Java’, for which Koorders had the material collected and undertook the economical part. He wrote numerous taxonomical papers, and several descriptions of new species in the ‘Icones Bogorienses’.

He is commemorated in several plant names, including the Brazilian genus Valetonia Durand.

E. Java: Probolinggo (Oct. 16, 1899); Lalidjiwo, slope G. Ardjoeno (June 12-14, 1901); W. Java: Tjampea (Nov. 1902); G. Gedeh (Dec. 31, 1903); Priangan mountains; Geger Bintang; Tandjoeng Priok (Nov. 1904); Krakatau (March 1, 1905), and P. Mas besar & P. Mas ketjil (March 2), both in company of Arsin and Golenkin; Islands in the Bay of Batavia; Centr. Java: Noesa Kambangan (Nov. 1907); W. Java: Poentjak (March 31, 1908; July 15); G. Pangrango (1908); Tjibodas (July 1911); Tjinjiroean (twice in 1911); E. Java: Pasoeroean (Dec. 6, 1917). Probably he collected in many other localities in W. Java.



Herb. Bog. [BO]: c. 800 nos, of which 550 were collected during his first stay of a fortnight at Tjinjiroean (W. Java) in 1911. Dupl. in Herb. Utrecht [U].

Hort. Bog.: living plants from Noesa Kambangan (1907), and from Jang Plateau (E. Java, 1916).
