Vernon, William

(Source: Flora Malesiana ser. 1, 1: Cyclopaedia of collectors)

F1.: 1688.

career:

English bryologist who in 1698 collected in Maryland, U.S.A., and later in England.

He is commemorated in the genus Vernonia Schreb. and in several plant species (cf. Backer, Verkl. Woordenb., 1936).

collections:

Plants from the East Indies and Maryland in Herb. Sloane = Brit. Mus. [BM]. He sent his collections to the London pharmacist Petiver, whose collections were purchased by Sloane.

The statement ‘East Indies’ probably means British India, and not the Dutch East Indies; presumably not collected himself.
