Died: 1844.

 

career:

Colonel in the British Army, serving from 1803-14 in British India; in 1828 appointed Governor of St Helena, and in 1830 stationed in Penang. Was in fact stationed in Ceylon as Adjutant-General from 1830-37; he made large journeys of inspection through all parts of the island.2

Several plants were named after him.

Dupl. in Herb. Edinb. [E] (ex Herb. Glasgow).
