Died: 1844.



Colonel in the British Army, serving from 1803-14 in British India; in 1828 appointed Governor of St Helena, and in 1830 stationed in Penang. Was in fact stationed in Ceylon as Adjutant-General from 1830-37; he made large journeys of inspection through all parts of the island.2

Several plants were named after him.

From 1830-37 collecting in Ceylon. - about 1837 in Penang and Singapore



Herb. Kew [K]: c. 1100 nos from Ceylon etc.; Herb. Brit. Mus. [BM]: 305 plants from Singapore and Penang (purch. 1862) + material with Herb. Shuttleworth (purch. 1877); Herb. Deless. (Geneva [G]): 218 nos from Singapore and Penang (1845).1

Dupl. in Herb. Edinb. [E] (ex Herb. Glasgow).
