Born: 1830, Lüneburg, SE of Hamburg, Germany. Died: 1878, Cuança, Ecuador.

 

career:

Was so deaf, that the first 6 years of his life he was supposed to be deaf and dumb. Horticulturist who from 1854-68 crossed South America. In 1858 he was appointed in the employ of the Belgian firm of J.J. Linden.1 In 1868 he returned to Germany to undergo a treatment for a serious eye disease; in 1869 he entered the service of the firm of Veitch & Sons (Exeter, England), for which he made several travels, viz in 1869-71 (see below), in 1872 to S. America, and in 1873-74 in Colombia (S. America). In 1875 he set out once more for America, working in that continent till his death.

Grammatophyllum wallisii Rchb.f. and other plants were named after him.

 

Collecting localities:2

Leaving Dec. 1869 via N. America, California, the Philippines, Japan (Yeddo), Hongkong, back to Manila (Luzon, P.I.);3 homeward voyage by way of Singapore, Penang, Suez Canal; back in Germany in winter 1871.-Data on a visit to Timor (Lesser Sunda Isls) (see sub collections) are not known to me.

Kew [K]: 160 nos from the Philippines, Colombia, Timor (pres. 1881-84); Brit. Mus. [BM]: Muscineae from the Philippines (1870) and New Granada (acq. with Herb. Hampe and Stephani); Herb. Vienna [W]: 250 nos, and orchids with Herb. Reichenbach [W]; a few in U.S. Nat. Herb. Wash. [US].
