Welsem, Johannes Wilhelmus Antonius van

Born: 1866, Deventer, O., Holland. Died: 1927, Batavia, Java.

 

career:

Schoolmaster, since 1890 serving in the D.E.I. His first station was Depok (W. Java), about 1893 on Saparoea (island S of Ceram),1 in 1904 transferred to Batavia, where he was attached to secondary schools from 1915-18, and subsequently at Bandoeng from 1919-22, retiring in the latter year, settling at Lembang, Priangan Residency, Java.

Together with C.A. Backer (see there) he wrote a botanical text-book;2 besides he published small papers in ‘De Tropische Natuur’.

 

Collecting localities:

c. 1916-18. W. Java: Batavia, Lembang (1918), etc.; in E. Java: G. Smeroe, etc.

Herb. Bog. [BO]: probably some hundreds of plants (a no 333 from G. Smeroe), but hardly any data are available. Also plants in Herb. Mus. Econ. Bot. Buit. = Herb. For. Res. Inst. Buitenzorg [BZF].
