Born: 1875, Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Germany. Died: 1941, Breslau, Germany.

 

career:

Botanist who took his Dr’s degree at Breslau in 1901; from 1904-05 German official of a Botanic Garden at Victoria, Cameroon (Africa); in 1906 Lecturer at Breslau; in 1908 making a voyage to the Federated Malay States and the D.E.I.1 to import seeds and young plants of rattan in the German colonies in Africa and the Southsea; in 1910 travelling in E. Africa. Since 1912 with the honorary rank of professor; in 192I appointed Extraordinary Professor of the University of Breslau, at first for plant geography only, since 1927 for systematics too; since 1941 Ordinary Professor.

Author on the plant world of the tropics, of a paper on the vegetation of Borneo,2 and of several papers on New Guinean and Malaysian Urticaceae etc.

Several Bornean plants were named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

1908.1 Malay Peninsula (March 24-Apr. 9): Singapore; Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Baru Caves (Apr. 3); Negri Sembilan: Seremban (Perhantian Tinggi Estate), G. Angsi; W. Java (mid-April-mid-May), making agricultural trips, and visiting Buitenzorg, Tjibodas and G. Gedeh (Apr. 19-21), and Tjipanas near Garoet (27), Kawah Manoek (28); E. Java: G. Tengger, Mungal Pass, Zandzee (May 5); in May sailing from Soerabaja to Borneo;3 SE. Borneo: Bandjermasin, from where ascending the Barito and the Sg. Negara to Kayup or Hayup on the Sg. Tabelong, in the latter place staying for 2 months; the next 2 months were spent on a trip crossing the eastern watershed to E. Borneo: Pas(s)ir (S of Balikpapan), by boat to Samarinda (mouth of the Mahakam), ascending the Mahakam, following Sg. Pahu and Sg. Lawa and crossing the watershed between the Mahakam and the Barito (between Lumo Sibak and Muarah Benangin, limestone plateau) on a 6-day trip; following Sg. Tewe and the Barito to Buntok, and proceeding by land to Kayup; finally a 2 days’ trip in the environs of Martapura (Sept.); after return in Java paying visits to various experiment stations. According to Backer (Verkl. Woordenb., 1936) he visited Sumatra too; in the ‘Reiseberichte’ Winkler himself mentions1 the possibility of a visit to Sumatra; evidence is still lacking.
