Born: 1903, Bergen op Zoom, N.Br., Holland. Died: 1970, Utrecht, Netherlands.

 

career:

Passed through the Horticultural School at Frederiksoord (Drente, Holland). In July 1927 he was appointed Assistant Curator of the Buitenzorg Botanic Gardens, and since August of the same year he was stationed in the Mountain Garden, Tjibodas. When in 1933 this post was discontinued, he stayed as Overseer. In 1940 he was put at the disposal of the ‘Committee for Commercial Plants’ (Commissie voor Handelsgewassen), after having returned to Buitenzorg in 1939. After World War II he was evacuated to Holland and was appointed Curator of the Buitenzorg Botanic Gardens in 1947. Repatriated in 1952; settled at Groenekan near Utrecht, and in the employ of the Genetical Institute of the University at Utrecht from 1953-69.

 

Collecting localities:

During his stay at Tjibodas in W. Java, from 1927-39, collecting many plants on G. Gedeh-Pangrango, Geger Bintang, and other ridges of this double-volcano; he also collected on G. Besser (= Bèsèr) near Sindanglaja (1929).-In 1938 he made 2 tours, one with O. Jaag (see there) to Alor etc. (Lesser Sunda Islands) in April-June, the other with A.J.G.H. Kostermans (see there) to Noesa Kambangan (S of Java) from Nov. 20-23.
