Palla, Dr Eduard

Born: 1864, Kremsier (Mähren), Moravia. Died: 1922, Graz, Czecho-Slovakia.

 

career:

Was educated at Vienna; in 1888 appointed Assistant in the Botanical Institute at Graz, in the course of years being promoted to Ordinary Professor of Botany (1913). He made a voyage to Java, occupying himself especially with the study and systematics of some cryptogamic families.

Author of systematic papers on Cyperaceae.

 

Collecting localities:

1900-01. W. Java: Buitenzorg (staying 3 months, till Febr. 1901),1 probably making trips in the neighbourhood; possibly in Centr. and E. Java too. Evidently visited S. Sumatra in Feb. 1901, as a Scleria was collected at Pladjoe (Palembang) on the 26th.

According to the biography (see below) he was in Java in 1901-02, which statement is certainly a mistake.

 

collections:

Herb. Graz [GZU], where Fr. Verdoorn in 1937 found a collection of large bundles of Java plants leg. Palla, seemingly common species of the classic hunting-grounds. According to the biography he collected many Java Cyperaceae which are still unidentified. Dupl. in Herb. Vienna [W].
