career:

Possibly the son of Erik Gustaf Edelfelt, a ship’s captain who traded to Australia, Callao, etc., in an Indiaman he bought in 1867.5

About 1880 forestaller of products and Agent of the English Government at Toaripi (= Motumotu) in SE. New Guinea; in 1885 he was mentioned by F. von Mueller as an emissary of Thomas Gulliver of Townsville who made large monetary sacrifices, to obtain some new scientific material from New Guinea; part of 1886 and the whole of 1887 he resided at Motumotu on the entrance of Williams River in the Papua Gulf; about 1888 Government-Agent at Samarai.

Several plants were named after him.

 

Collecting localities:

SE. New Guinea.1 1884. Embarking at Townsville (May 25); Thursday Isl. (29); Port Moresby, setting out (June 27) on an expedition to the Astrolabe Range, visiting Gemenoma Valley; Narianumu, NW. spur, Tabori Distr.; collecting Quercus gulliveri and Grevillia edelfeltii; Rona Falls in the Laloki River; back at Port Moresby (Sept. 18); Narianumu (27). In Nov. setting out on a 2nd expedition, aiming the ascent of Mt Yule (Kowio); sailing from Port Moresby (Oct. 17) to Maiva, Hula (Hood Point), Keppel Point (Aroma), Davitt River, Beleropu, Aroma (25), Kerepuna (29-Nov. 2), Kalo (Kemp Welch), Hula (28); subsequently returning (Dec. 8) without having accomplished the original object.-1887. With some French friars of the mission Sacré-Coeur, in August exploring the neighbourhood of Mt Yule: Inawabui Village, Eboa, Bebeo, Rarai (15-17), St Joseph River; the plan to ascent Mt Yule fell through again.

Herb. Melbourne [MEL]: > 33 nos; in Herb. Decand. (Geneva [G]): e.g. Aglaia edelfeldti C.DC. from Port Moresby. He collected ferns too,2 some preserved in Herb. Bonaparte (= Paris [P]). Plants of his were described by F. von Mueller;3 some orchids by Kränzlin.4 More than 222 nos; Herb. Copenh. [C]: dupl. Scitamineae.
